What is Free Recovery?
If a vehicle breaks down or is damaged during roadworks it can result in congestion, delays, or even accidents. To make sure broken-down vehicles are cleared quickly, National Highways arranges a free recovery service through roadworks on our network where one or more of the following applies:
- the hard shoulder is being used as a running (“live”) lane
- there is no direct access to the hard shoulder, lay-bys and emergency refuges
- we have reduced carriageway lane widths
- we have suspended the use of emergency telephones
Who provides Free Recovery.
National highways contracts it out to dedicated Roadworks Recovery companies IE: Saunders Roadworks Recovery (Saunders Garage LTD)
How can it be Free?

If I breakdown in Free Recovery, will they take me home?
Sadly no, although we will always go above and beyond to help you we can only take you to a place of safety. This could be a motorway service area or our dedicated customer care unit which provides free refreshments while you wait for your breakdown service to turn up.
